Visiting Theologian

Context and Objectives

The Visiting theologian program is a proposal organized by IQS - Universitat Ramon Llull and Jesuits Catalonia (the Society of Jesus in Catalonia), in collaboration with Cristianisme i Justicia, ESADE, UNIJES, and the Kircher Network. Its aim is to strengthen the presence of theological reflection within the Jesuit university ecosystem in Barcelona. Through the Visiting Theologian Program (VTP), we seek to promote the dialogue between theological, philosophical, and religious reflection and the contemporary challenges of our world, with the ultimate goal of developing new proposals in the field of fundamental theology.

Barcelona currently offers an ideal environment of thought and cultural diversity for a project of this kind, as well as a long tradition of fundamental theological reflection. The candidate selected for the VTP will have access to a network of contacts with thinkers in the fields of economics, technology, social sciences, and the humanities, which will enrich their personal project.

Description

Applications are being accepted for a three- to six-month visiting theologian position at IQS Barcelona. The successful candidate will be provided with a workspace at IQS and all the facilities afforded to faculty, such as copying services, a cafeteria, and access to the Ramon Llull University library, with its outstanding theology collections, including the Sant Pacià Library (library of the Barcelona Seminary School) and the Borja Library (formerly the Borja Library). The successful candidate will also have access to the UNIJES (Network of Spanish Jesuit Higher Education Organizations) library system, which includes the libraries of the Schools of Theology at the University of Deusto (Bilbao), the Pontifical University of Comillas (Madrid), and Loyola University (Seville).

The position should last from three to six months, between January and May 2027, and it is based in Barcelona. It should offer a gross monthly salary of €1100. The organizers are providing accommodation at the Jesuit Residence of the Sagrat Cor in Barcelona.

The professors from the Chair of Ethics and Christian Thought at IQS will act as hosts for the faculty during their stay. We accept applications from national and international candidates.

Research topics

The following research topics correspond to the thematic lines along which, in recent decades, the Jesuit missions to Catalonia have been developing the Tasca seva.

• Science, technology and sustainability
  

This line of research includes all possible interactions between theology and religious studies with current developments in science, technology, or sustainability.

• Faith and Justice
  

This line of research includes all possible interactions between theology and religious studies in disciplines such as economics, social economy, development studies, social theory, sociology, cultural studies, poverty studies, political science, politics and aporophobia.

• Secular world and spirituality
  

This line of inquiry includes the study of the different forms of spirituality today, how they are lived, what new phenomena we are experiencing, how secular societies receive the contributions of religions, the main challenges of the post-secular context and the issue of interreligious dialogue and the theology of religions.

• Other lines of research
  

Other lines of research related to contemporary challenges and linked to the tradition of theological work in Catalonia can also be considered, such as the field of bioethics, feminist theology, ecclesiology, etc.

Ideally, candidates should have a background in both theology and philosophy. They should also possess research skills in both areas, as demonstrated by their publication record. The visiting theologian's responsibilities will include:

a) Develop the personal research project as stated in your application.

b) Present your research in a session at the Barcelona Theological Seminary of Christianity and Justice.

c) Give a lecture at IQS.

d) Availability to give lectures, seminars and training in various entities of the Faith Service of the Society of Jesus in Catalonia.
